Virtual Reality Survey Results

We conducted a survey to research certain questions that we were interested on by using Surveymonkey. We sent out surveys via the survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KVK5JDZ to the public where this was shared amongst our acquaintances.

The surveys were mostly answered by teenagers and adults. The surveys were sent out by each group member to their family, friends and colleagues. 100 people in total took part in the answering of the survey.

Analysis of results:

Question 1:
The results gathered from this question show that an overall majority of people (70%) are for the development of Virtual Reality. 21% of the surveyed group are indifferent towards future development of Virtual Reality and only 9% are against the development of Virtual Reality.
Question 2:
Question 2 had a very mixed response towards the question with 58% of the responses were in favour of having never used Virtual reality technology. This tells us that the technology is not easily available to many people.  Of the 42% of people that had used Virtual Reality, the Samsung Gear was the most commonly used. The Lenovo ANTVR had been encountered the least.

Question 3:
In terms of the responses from question 3, it is clear to say that many people feel that they do not have a strong knowledge of Virtual Reality. Many people feel that they have a moderate amount of knowledge of Virtual Reality. Figures came in at 58% of responses were people that have a moderate knowledge, 34% had no knowledge on Virtual Reality, and only 8% felt that had a strong basis of knowledge on Virtual Reality.
Question 4:
The results from this question gave a clear indication as to which industry people thought Virtual Reality would impact the most. 50% of responses were in favour of entertainment, 32% were in favour of healthcare, 9% in favour of sport, 5% in favour of social media, and 4% in other industries. This shows us that people believe Virtual Reality would impact the entertainment and healthcare industry the most.

Question 5:
Adolescence is believed to be the targeted group of Virtual Reality. Adolescence had a total of 74%. The next group was adulthood. They had 55%. There were some respondents that believed it would impact both adolescence and adulthood and that is why the percentages do not add up to 100%. People do not really believe that Virtual Reality will be targeted at the pre-adolescence or elderly groups.
Question 6:
Subway transport is the most favoured by people to be run by Virtual Reality according to our feedback. Subway had a 45% result. 37% of surveyed responses were against the use of Virtual Reality in transport. The other three groups accumulated 52%. Once again people were able to vote for multiple answers and thus the feedback did not add up to 100%. It is clear, however, to see that people would prefer the use of Virtual Reality in subway transport, then aeroplane transport, then boat transport, and then lastly motor vehicle transport.

Discussion of results:

Through the collection of this data we found that most people surveyed are for the development of Virtual Reality and the use of Virtual Reality in our everyday lives.  It can be seen that although people are for the development, many of them have not experienced any form of Virtual Reality and also feel that they do not have enough knowledge about this form of technology.  Out of the people we surveyed it is also clear that the Samsung Gear is the most commonly used form of virtual reality. This could be down to individual preference or the availability of the Samsung Gear to the public in comparison to other producers of virtual reality glasses. With further development and decrease in costing, more and more people will have access to forms of virtual reality and thus our results would change as development increases.  It is seen that the use of virtual reality will bring about improved sectors in many industries of the world.

The results showed that people believe that entertainment and healthcare would be the two main areas where virtual reality would impact. This would lead to an increase growth in the entertainment industry and an improve and efficient healthcare industry across the world.  Virtual reality is seen to be used in many workplaces and is seen to be a tool in helping businessman to create new opportunities. However, from research gathered it can be seen that people view virtual reality as a product mainly for adolescence. This would mean that virtual reality would be used in entertainment (gaming, and movies) rather than in work areas.  The use of virtual reality in transport drew up a mixed response in the survey.  Just over a third of the responses were against the use of virtual reality in transport and feel that they would want to be in the presence of somebody who is transporting them for safety reasons. The rest of the responses were mainly in favour of subway transport. This could be down to the fact that some trains and rail transport are already ‘driver less’ and thus virtual reality would not affect this sector of transport that much. In terms of air travel, there were around 20% of responses for the use of virtual reality in air travel. This number is lower than subway travel possibly for the reason that people feel the need to have a pilot in the aeroplane at all times in case something were to go wrong. Also the use of virtual reality could give rise to cyber terrorism in transport and could cause serious problems if aeroplanes, cars, trains, and boats were targeted and hacked by terrorists.

The availability and use of virtual reality is still little in the current era. With further and further developments and advancements, more people will change their views on virtual reality. This would mean that our results in future might need to be changed. People could become more against virtual reality if the technology brings about problems to them that were not there previously. Or people could turn from being against the development of virtual reality at this stage but later on after seeing successes that came from virtual reality.

Recommendations:

From the results gathered, it is recommended that people to become familiar with virtual reality and how virtual reality works. Many people are for the development of virtual reality and it is looking highly likely that virtual reality will be the next major technological advancement that people will go through. Thus becoming familiar with it will lead to you being able to adapt to virtual reality and not forming part of the group of people who cannot use the new technology and losing out on, for example, potential jobs.

The second recommendation is to investigate which producer of virtual reality glasses benefits you. From our responses many people have found Samsung Gear more accessible and this could mean that Samsung are a main producer in virtual reality glasses. It is highly recommended to use a company that is leading the market in the creation of virtual reality. This would prevent you from encountering faulty equipment.

A third recommendation is to allow for family members, especially children, to encounter virtual reality once it becomes affordable to most consumers. This will allow them to become familiar with virtual reality and encounter different aspects of the world at an early age. This is beneficial because it could lead to an improved economy as children will be encouraged to invent items that can relate with virtual reality. It can also give people the opportunity to experience different actions and emotions from their own homes as previously they wouldn’t be able to. This would include travel, sports games and entertainment when one uses virtual reality.

A forth recommendation is that companies must be recommended to focus on transport methods that people are comfortable with and research these methods further. Companies must not waste resources and time on researching transport methods that people do not feel comfortable with when virtual reality is in use.
