Drawbacks of Virtual Reality

The world of virtual reality is an emerging and immersive one with countless possibilities in not only the entertainment sector but in the fields of medicine, sport and architecture as well. However, before we allow Virtual Reality to claim territory in our perceptual landscape, we should consider the pitfalls that will inevitably arise from the creation of artificial environments.

One of the primary concerns of implementing Virtual Reality is the cost factor. Not only is the equipment required to create a Virtual Reality system pricey, but since the technology is relatively new and elusive, developers have to conduct numerous tests and experiments which is also a costly process. People who do not have access to this technology or those that cannot afford it will be excluded and this creates a further divide between social classes in the Information Age.

Lack of governance and authority could lead to virtual criminality. Due to the anonymity that Virtual Reality provides, users may be inclined to perform activities online that are prohibited in the real world or act in a way that is not socially appropriate. The threat of cyber-bullying will be imminent.

Over time Virtual Reality could lead to social isolation as people become more reliant on virtual interaction. The lack of human interaction can put a strain on the users relationships with friends and family and eventually the absence of physical communication will lead to depression. People may also use Virtual Reality as a form of escapism; spending all their time in an exciting world beyond their realm instead of fulfilling their responsibilities or solving their real-world problems. This could potentially lead users to lose touch with reality and face irreparable damage in the long run.

It is clear that in-depth research, development and precautionary measures will have to take place to ensure that everyone can safely reap the benefits of Virtual Reality.
