VR has the ability to catalysed the experience of
being in the same room as colleagues or customers, even if they are countries
apart. VR is able to eradicate job isolation between large companies and able
to create a more productive and cohesive work environment for employees. This
connectedness forms the basis of inter-organizational collaboration.
NASA is a prime example of VR being used in the
workplace (Reference 1). This technology allows astronauts to be placed in
multiple situations, which they are likely to undergo while in space, in order
for them to gain valuable experience. The simulations teach the astronauts what
it is like to move around and perform complicated tasks in zero gravity.
Customer service training is the more “down to
earth” use for VR in the workplace. The technology allows employees to learn
how to satisfy and retain customers as well as use appropriate body language,
greetings and tone of voice. These systems are easy to learn and even easier to
use as it requires the employee to act natural and no prior knowledge of the
technology is needed (Reference 2).
The experience of being in the same room is
reiterated when VR is used for business interviews and board meetings. The
element of distance has no effect to the experience and this allows board
meetings to suite everybody’s schedule as there is no need to meet in one
location (Reference 3). Interviews can be more efficient as potential
candidates can be put through a simulation in order to determine if he/she is suited
for the required position.
VR allows information to flow effortlessly within
the workplace and it is able to maximise resources in order to better the
company and its profits.
