Introduction

Welcome, one and all, to our hub of learning, news and excitement. A virtual space where we can explore our up-and-coming technological reality and how it affects various aspects of daily life. Come and join the conversation.

Background of the Virtual Reality Survey

Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with software and presented to the user in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as a real environment.

This survey has been drawn up in order to investigate and analyse the general public's interest, knowledge and awareness of virtual reality as well as people's views on the current virtual reality technology that has recently been released. if the majority of people are interested in using virtual reality, what could make them interested and to what extent people feel willing and ready to operate in daily life with virtual reality, such as in transportation.

Virtual Reality Survey Results

We conducted a survey to research certain questions that we were interested on by using Surveymonkey. We sent out surveys via the survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KVK5JDZ to the public where this was shared amongst our acquaintances.

The surveys were mostly answered by teenagers and adults. The surveys were sent out by each group member to their family, friends and colleagues. 100 people in total took part in the answering of the survey.

The Next Best Thing for Architects

VR will allow architects to explore their designs and to accurately analyse a building project before it has even been erected. The interactivity of a headset, such as Oculus Rift, will allow for both clients and architects to experiment with various designs, lighting and materials to allow for the creation of the best output for all. They will also able to identify issues and flaws that would normally be undetectable or overlooked using current techniques such as orthographic drawings and standard computer modelling.

Drawbacks of Virtual Reality

The world of virtual reality is an emerging and immersive one with countless possibilities in not only the entertainment sector but in the fields of medicine, sport and architecture as well. However, before we allow Virtual Reality to claim territory in our perceptual landscape, we should consider the pitfalls that will inevitably arise from the creation of artificial environments.

The History of VR

Virtual reality has a long and tumultuous past filled with as many deaths as it has attempts at revival. However, the recent surge in production and society’s fascination could finally be the industry’s salvation. Let us take a look at history to see how VR got here.

VR in Entertainment

What is watching a movie really about? Why do people enjoy movies? It is all about the Experience. The feeling of escaping one’s own reality, to be transported into a new world. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist explains that the reason why people are attracted to stories is;“That what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive so that we can actually feel the rapture being alive.” http://www.butler-bowdon.com/joseph-campbell---power-of-myth.html

We have noticed some drastic technological advancements in our everyday sporting codes, which have made playing, scoring, umpiring and watching a lot easier, more enjoyable, and a lot fairer. Such advancements include The Hawk-eye technology in tennis, Goal-line technology in soccer, etc.

Virtual Reality in Social Interactions

Virtual reality will connect people and take socialisation to a whole new level.

Smart software and sensors are designed to enable detection of facial expressions and motion when one is using VR technology. The parties involved would be able to feel the realistic existence of the other person. This would allow people to make friends easier, keep in touch with loved ones, maintain long distance relationships and even hang out with friends. Communication would become much more convenient and internet trolls can be avoided.

Virtual Reality in Economics

With the new development and advances in Virtual Reality, many sectors of the economy will face advantageous changes. Virtual Reality has the potential to improve consumer living as it is predicted to reduce the costs of living. This would strengthen an economy of a country and improve poverty levels.  With increasing development of VR, the digital divide across the world would become smaller and more people will be connected with the same level of technology.

Virtual Reality in Education

Virtual Reality has taken the world by storm and has intrigued thousands of people worldwide. The release of devices such as the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and many others have created many opportunities that enabled VR to enter the field of education.

VR in Gaming

Consumer’s choices are driven by their own self-interest. When new gadgets are released into the market, demand for that product is substantially large. Choices that consumers make are also affected by their income, which is why an industry needs to take into consideration all of their target markets. Virtual reality gaming is a fast growing trend amongst gamers around the world which is why they have made the equipment more accessible to users.

Virtual Reality in Health Care

The use of virtual reality technology in the medical field has led to new procedures occurring in both surgery as well as patient recovery.  Although virtual reality has not been fully implemented into the healthcare profession due to its recent arrival, it is creating various advantages to the areas it is introduced.

VR has the ability to catalysed the experience of being in the same room as colleagues or customers, even if they are countries apart. VR is able to eradicate job isolation between large companies and able to create a more productive and cohesive work environment for employees. This connectedness forms the basis of inter-organizational collaboration.

“How does VR work? How does wearable tech make you think you’re standing on Mars when you’re actually about to bump into the kitchen counter?”

Conclusion

Having looked at the various ways in which VR is changing and will continue to change daily life, we can conclude that it will ultimately benefit society. Whether it is making current processes more efficient or completely changing the process, it is definitely an exciting time to be alive and witness the evolution of society into a technological landscape.
